Taking the Leap from Middle Leadership: What Might Be Holding You Back?
Many exceptional middle leaders are ready for the next step yet still hesitate to move into senior roles. The hesitation is rarely about capability. It often comes from confidence, clarity and the invisible barriers that make the leap feel bigger than it actually is.
Here are some of the most common reasons leaders hold back.
1. You don’t always feel as ready as others think you are
It’s very common to downplay your own readiness. When you compare yourself to an experienced principal or head of school, it can feel like you need to know more or be more before you put your hand up. The truth is, confidence usually settles in after you make the move, not before.
2. The jump feels like a completely different job
Stepping from leading a team to leading an entire school (or site) can feel like stepping into a new identity. It’s broader, more complex and far more relational. That shift alone can make even strong leaders question themselves.
3. You don’t always see yourself in the senior roles ahead of you
If leadership pathways don’t feel relatable or accessible, it’s easy to assume the next level isn’t for you. When you don’t see a range of leadership styles or backgrounds at the table, the leap can feel further away than it actually is.
4. You’re already carrying a heavy load
Middle leaders juggle a lot. Depending on the size of the school, some still carry teaching or classroom duties alongside people leadership, program responsibilities, culture, communication and the day to day problem solving that keeps a school steady. When you’re already stretched, stepping up into a role can feel out of reach unless there is genuine support around you.
5. The pressure to be perfect sneaks in
There’s an unhelpful idea that senior leaders need to have every answer. They don’t. What matters most is self awareness, emotional intelligence and a willingness to grow. No one steps into senior leadership as a finished product.
