Three Traits Great Leaders Share

Great school leadership takes many forms, including sustaining long-term trust, leading transformational change, achieving measurable improvements, and preserving morale through adversity. However, across these varied paths, success depends on a core set of traits. While no leader excels in every possible quality, the very best consistently demonstrate three core attributes.

1. Listening, Really Listening

The best leaders make an effort to listen to different points of view, even when those opinions are difficult or unpopular. They understand when to ask for input and when to simply listen without feeling the need to reply right away.

2. Decisiveness

Process is important, but so is knowing when to take action. Good leaders find a balance between asking for advice and making quick, sometimes tough, decisions when needed.

3. A Healthy Sense of Humour

A sense of humour is essential, even if people don’t always notice it. Leaders who can laugh and keep things in perspective during tough times stay grounded and build stronger relationships in their schools. Research suggests that a positive emotional climate, fostered by humour, can lead to measurable boosts in both teacher resilience and student engagement. 

By creating an environment where laughter is embraced, leaders not only improve morale but also enhance performance, illustrating that humour is a strategic leadership tool.
