The Crucial Function of School Governance: Part 2 - Risks

The “Education Risk Report” for 2024, published by Ideagen, outlines several critical findings for schools and systems to consider; today, I will focus on governance and leadership challenges. Unfortunately, as its title suggests, the report mainly focuses on risk and issues. While there are undoubtedly numerous positive aspects in this area for our schools, this article will focus on “gaps” that need to be addressed and planned for as we transition into 2025.

Lack of Confidence

According to the 2024 Education Risk Report, 39% of the surveyed participants expressed a lack of confidence in their school boards, a 2% increase from 2023. This persistent lack of trust over the past couple of years underscores the crucial need to address this and discover why.

Risk

In the coming year, 55% of respondents plan to make substantial changes to their governance, risk, and compliance policies and regulations, suggesting that current structures are outdated or need revision. Cyber threats are an essential topic for boards to work on while also ensuring that policies are relevant and cover the myriad risks schools face.
