The Crucial Function of School Governance Part 1 - Supporting the Principal
After navigating past the impressive imagery of smiling children flying across every school’s website nowadays, under the “About” tab, you will find links to either “Governance”, “School Governance”, or “Leadership and Governance”. From here, we are directed to a variety of terms like “College Board”, “Council of Governors”, “College Advisory Council”, “School Council”, “Board of Governors”, “College Council”, and even one school who referred to their governing body as “Board” (fortunately, spelled correctly). Regardless, most (I will just say boards from now on) have three things to do when it boils down to it:
- Oversee the strategic future of the school (mission and vision)
- Oversee the financial structure of the school (and usually capital works or similar more considerable fiscal expenses)
- And hire and, hopefully, not fire the principal.
