Supporting the Next Generation: The Ripple Effect of Women Helping Women

Some of the most powerful leadership lessons are not taught in workshops or formal programs. They are shared over a cup of coffee, in a quiet office conversation, or through a message that arrives at just the right time.

For many women in leadership, growth has come not just from opportunity but from encouragement: a mentor who believed in them, a colleague who shared advice freely, or a leader who modelled how to navigate challenge with calm and conviction. These moments often go unnoticed, yet they create the ripples that sustain leadership for the long term.

The power of informal mentoring

Formal mentoring programs are invaluable, but often the real magic often happens informally. It is in the moments when one person sees potential in another and takes the time to say, “You’d be great at this.” That simple act of confidence can change the direction of a career.

In schools and educational organisations, these quiet acts of mentoring happen every day. An assistant principal helping a new leader navigate parent communication, a seasoned head of school offering reassurance during a tough week, or a colleague sharing their own lessons from early mistakes. These are not grand gestures; they are human connections that build confidence and belonging.

Sustainable leadership grows from generosity

When leaders lift others, they strengthen the entire leadership ecosystem. Mentoring fosters continuity, as leaders who feel supported are more likely to stay, grow and, in turn, support others. This creates a culture where leadership is shared, not scarce.

It is also one of the most effective ways to prevent burnout and isolation, particularly in roles that can feel lonely at the top. Knowing there is someone who understands the pressures of leadership and who has been there before can make the difference between staying the course and stepping away.

An inclusive approach to leadership

I have always believed in supporting the right person for the role, the one who brings integrity, capability and alignment with purpose, regardless of gender or identity. Advocacy for women in leadership does not mean exclusion; it is about ensuring that every capable leader has the chance to step forward and succeed.

By recognising and mentoring diverse voices, we strengthen the whole community and open the door wider for those who might otherwise hesitate to step through.
